Expanding the invasion toolbox: including stable isotope analysis in risk assessment

چکیده
Species introductions are a major concern for ecosystem functioning, socio-economic wealth, and human well-being. Preventing proved to be the most effective management strategy, various tools such as species distribution models risk assessment protocols have been developed or applied this purpose. These approaches use information on predict its potential invasiveness impact in case of introduction into new area. At same time, much biodiversity has lost due multiple drivers. Ways determine successful reintroductions once native but now extinct well assisted migrations yet missing. Stable isotope analyses commonly used reconstruct species’ feeding ecology trophic interactions within communities. Recently, method potentially arising absence target species. Here we propose implementation stable analysis an approach schemes increase accuracy predicting invader impacts success migrations. We review discuss possibilities limitations methods usage, suggesting promising useful applications scientists managers.

Expanding the Isotopic Toolbox: Applications of Hydrogen and Oxygen Stable Isotope Ratios to Food Web Studies
The measurement of stable carbon ( 13 δ C) and nitrogen ( 15 δ N) isotopes in tissues of organisms has formed the foundation of isotopic food web reconstructions, as these values directly reflect assimilated diet. In contrast, stable hydrogen ( 2 δ H) and oxygen ( 18 δ O) isotope measurements have typically been reserved for studies of migratory origin and paleoclimate reconstruction based on s...
متن کاملStable Isotope Application in Animal Nutrition Science
The application of stable isotope analysis (SIA) has become a standard scientific approach in Agricultural and Ecological researches and, more in general, in several disciplines such as biology, botany, zoology, organic chemistry, climatology, and nutrition. The main objectives of this paper are (1) to provide a simple definition of stable isotopes and (2) to illustrate analytical measurement m...
متن کاملExpanding the UniFrac Toolbox
The UniFrac distance metric is often used to separate groups in microbiome analysis, but requires a constant sequencing depth to work properly. Here we demonstrate that unweighted UniFrac is highly sensitive to rarefaction instance and to sequencing depth in uniform data sets with no clear structure or separation between groups. We show that this arises because of subcompositional effects. We i...

15 صفحه اولStable isotope analysis in fisheries food webs
Stable isotope analysis has been used as a technique to analyse fisheries food webs for a quarter of a century, and remains the principal method for determining energy and nutrient pathways from primary producers to consumers in aquatic ecosystems. Carbon isotope analysis has been used to distinguish autotrophs at the base of inshore and offshore fisheries food webs. The combination of nitrogen...
